  • What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
We discussed students using class websites to learn and blog any time. We are set up for this. There has been no encouragement or incentives to work from home in the weekends or after school, but some students are doing this.

  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
Looking at other school's class sites has reassured me that what I am experimenting with is on the right track.

  • What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
The turn in sheet that I made last week has been working, and I compared it with Hannah's to see if there is anything else I can do to improve it.

  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
I''m continuing to steadily streamline systems so that planning, assessment, feedback can be seen in one place and can serve multiple purposes eg. a slide show lesson can also be my part of my planning.

Today I leaned more about using Castify, Sheets and Hapara. All of these were useful and timely, as I have wanted to include these all more effectively in our multimodal lessons, and for collecting work on our class site.

At the moment I have been using other peoples videos from Youtube for some lessons, and these are not always quite right for what I'm trying to achieve. A little bit more exposure to Castify has given me a potential answer to this challenge.

I've also been interested in developing a single place for students to hand in their work, and wasn't quite sure how to get this right. A few tips from Gerhard about Sheets were very useful here.

One of my goals re digital fluency is to have efficient systems for our team of teachers and students to use, and today was another step forward towards that.

REFLECTION DFI7
  • What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
Reinforced my understanding of what the future is looking like in terms of work and learning, and how my concept of literacy needs to broaden significantly to incorporate more digital literacy and fluency.

  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
I learned a bit more about coding and beginning programmes like Scratch and Hour of Code. A lot of my students use this in our classroom, but I haven't spent a lot of time on it myself, so this was useful.

  • What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
As above -

  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
Just some more general knowledge about how tech works, and the directions it is moving towards. Once again I learned just how much I don't know what I don't know.

  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
I had time to work on building a site, which definitely improved my capability, and in the long term has possibilities of improving workflow.
  • What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
One of my goals is to use our class website effectively and efficiency. Todays information and particularly the time to experiment has been an important step in this process.
  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
This stuff is not something I am likely to use at home, but it is always useful to get some more insight into how things work.

Today I continued to build the knowledge to build and develop our class website into something that is useful. A lot of this was repeating stuff I learned last week but was not fully conversant with. This is another step on a long journey towards making our site an effective learning tool. I focused on becoming quicker at using Google Draw to create standardized buttons that I can use to standardize the site, and I also looked at using this idea to create a player of the day page which is easy to update each week.
Last week I trialed using the site as a multi-modal learning tool. Had a few teething issues eg. sharing, and students clicking ahead without reading instructions. Overall engagement was high.

  • What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
Today I learned a reasonable amount about setting up multi-modal pages on our class website. Mainly this learning how to set things up eg. I set up my maths page in a multi-modal style, adding slide shows and videos. If I can get quicker & smarter at this I can see it streamlining my requirements for planning, prep, assessment, engagement, visibility and accountability into one space.
  • What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
This learning will go towards our site being operational ie. engaging and functional, which it is neither at the moment! This year my students have been doing a lot more of their learning digitally, and this is a timely continuation of that pathway for my students and myself.
  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
My workload/workflow is bearing down on me at the moment, and I am not getting everything done. This has an effect on my home life. This process may improve this.

DFL number 3 reflection

  • What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Dorothy discussed what creativity can be in schools, and this made me evaluate my ideas of what creativity is, and think about how I can create more or better thought out creative opportunities in my class.

  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

I learnt to embed maps and charts into blogs and other apps, something that I had tried to teach myself last week without any success. I learnt a few handy time saving tips on sheets eg freeze line which is useful to me. Ditto for Hapara, I'm not using it as well as I would like to, and asked Mark to show me how to work with my groups, which I had been struggling with.

  • What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

Embedding charts and maps into blogs.

The WWW reflection/sharing time was useful in 2 ways. Firstly I got a few tips about how I might solve a problem I had with voice to text. I think this has a lot of potential for my students, and am keen to get it going smoothly. Secondly, I thought this process would be very useful to use in my class with the students. I have done similar things before, but for some reason I can't define the terminology of What worked, what didn't work, what do you need help with ? hit the spot with me. Additionally actually typing and sharing responses with each other at the same time was interesting and much more engaging for me than just talking which often leads to me losing focus. I have often struggled to get a really clear picture of exactly what the kids have learned, not learned and need help with, and this model could be another way of clarifying and deepening my understanding of the students learning from their perspective.

Some of the workflow tools appeared to be useful for me and may be helpful in streamlining some of the things I do. In particular Google Keep is a practical note taking system that is very quick to use.

  • What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
A review of the background reinforced my understanding the specific achievements that have been achieved and began to inform of of how these have been made.
  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
A couple of the practical ideas eg using voice to text as a reading and writing tool are things that I have not considered using, and caused me to think more carefully about why I haven,t been using these.
  • What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
As above.
  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
I am hopeful that using voice to text will be a small thing that will reduce my workload and also my confidence that I am being effective.
